Additionally, the Twin Trading team can offer a wealth of knowledge on the market for Fairtrade-certified coffee, nuts and other commodities.

Key facts about Twin

  • Twin is a pioneering fair trade organisation set up in 1985. It launched the very first certified Fairtrade coffee, Cáfedirect, with Traidcraft, Oxfam and Equal Exchange in 1991. It also set up and part-owns Divine Chocolate and Liberation Foods.
  • Twin has played a lead role in developing the market for fairly traded products including coffee, cocoa, fruit and nuts, and participates in the ongoing development of Fairtrade standards.
  • Twin is a membership organisation with 32 producer members from Africa, Latin America and Asia.
  • Twin works with over 50 farmer organisations in 18 countries representing over 400,000 farmers.
  • Twin works closely with producers on the ground through funded projects to develop capacity and infrastructure, overcome market barriers, adapt to the challenges of climate change and improve product quality – building resilience and adding value to their business.
  • Twin is a registered charity in the UK and is the sole owner of Twin Trading, a limited guarantee company which trades directly with producers in the global south. All profits are reinvested in Twin projects.
  • Twin’s head office is based in London with a permanent staff of 16 working with managing director Ian Barney. It also has a number of expert associates working on the ground in Africa and Latin America.
