Twin wins funding for ambitious new project in Nicaragua

Twin has been successful in winning Big Lottery Fund (BLF) support for a new coffee project in Nicaragua. The ‘Double Espresso’ project will benefit some 10,000-plus households across 10 producer organisations in the Cafénica network.

Working with smallholder coffee farmers, the project will help them to gain the skills and knowledge they need to adapt to imminent climate change threats. The project will also provide training in price risk management, which is vital for protecting smallholder incomes in a volatile market.

Bukonzo Joint’s coffee excellence recognised

Twin’s partner, the Bukonzo Joint coffee cooperative in Uganda, earned an impressive two places in the country’s Arabica Top 5 at the 2012 Taste of Harvest Coffee Competition in Kampala last week.

35 Uganda Arabica coffees were submitted from different regions of the country, and were roasted, cupped and scored using the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) internationally-recognised cupping protocol.

Two Bukonzo Joint coffees were rated in the Top 5, coming third and fifth with 84.21 and 83.89 respectively.

Twin welcomes new member Cenfrocafe, Peru

Twin is pleased to welcome Cooperativa de Servicios Múltiples - Cenfrocafe – as our newest member. The Peruvian coffee cooperative was unanimously elected as a member at our recent AGM.

Twin Trading has been trading with Cenfrocafe for over two years. The cooperative has been operating since 1999 in the districts to Tabaconas and San Ignacio in Peru. It became Fairtrade certified in 2007 and has been exporting Fairtrade coffee to USA and Europe since.

Fair Trade USA to leave FLO system

Twin is concerned about Fair Trade USA’s recent announcement that they are to leave the FLO system. The USA is a significant Fairtrade market and accounts for over 40% of global Fairtrade coffee sales.  Many of the smallholder farmer groups, with whom we work, are dependent on exports to USA Fairtrade markets (up to 80%). The full implications, however, of Fair Trade USA’s decision are not immediately apparent. For many producer organisations these changes have created a significant level of uncertainty.
