This week, in Seattle, I was delighted to accept on behalf of Twin a prestigious award from the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), we were the winners of the Sustainable Business category.
This incredible achievement recognises the years of hard work and innovation of many people. Those who have worked directly for Twin, our team of Associates, our buyers, funders and most importantly the many smallholder farmers and their organisations that we work with.
Since we were formed in 1985 we have had a rich history of challenging the norm! Looking to disrupt ‘business as usual’ and looking to trade in new ways that have the best interests of smallholder farmers at their heart.
We have successfully innovated in a number of commodities creating business that continue to succeed today – Café Direct, Divine Chocolate, Liberation Nuts and Agrofair. We continue to bring producers and buyers closer together and to create an environment where smallholder farmers have the power to shape their own business and community development.
We currently work with around 59 farmer groups, who together represent 400,000 smallholder farmers. We combine trading, development programmes and advocacy to develop sustainable, democratic farmer owned businesses that in turn produce great quality coffee, cocoa and nuts.
Over the last week we have been hard at work ensure this work continues. We have travelled to the United States with partners from Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo and engaged in conversations and debates covering a wider variety of topics. How to make coffee farming an industry that offers a bright future for the next generation of farmers, sharing approaches and tools for tackling climate change and gender equity. These are all topics, close to our heart, and areas where we are actively seeking to collaborate and make an impact.
The journey from a humble beginning as an information network, through attempts to trade in rocking chairs and cigars through to a leader in sustainability and thought leadership has been exciting and we all look forward to a bright future.
