Twin presents market-led solutions to aflatoxin in World Bank FARMD webinar

Aflatoxin is produced by a soil borne fungus (aspergillus) that grows on staples such as maize, rice and groundnuts. 4.5 billion people are potentially exposed to the toxin through their diets, resulting in suppression of the immune system, childhood stunting and liver cancer.

Twin, the Food and Environment Research Agency (Fera) and Malawi Programme for Aflatoxin Control (MAPAC) will present solutions to one of the most complex global agricultural risk management challenges in a World Bank FARMD webinar on Tuesday 19 November at 14.00.

The webinar explores the approach taken by Malawi to develop a framework aligned with the Partnership for Aflatoxin Control in Africa (PACA) that seeks to address the challenges of monitoring, managing and mitigating aflatoxin risks in maize and groundnuts.

Speakers

Andrew Emmott, Twin: Andrew works with smallholder organisations such as the National Association of Smallholder Farmers in Malawi (NASFAM) to develop groundnut supply chains and promote a better understanding of the complex issues, challenges and risks that aflatoxin presents to African exporters.

Julian Smith, Fera: Julian comes from the Food and Environment Research Agency in the UK (Fera) which has a number of reference laboratories in the UK and through its international work presents MAPAC with an opportunity to strengthen in-country laboratories to test for aflatoxin contamination and to create standards for safe levels of aflatoxin in crops.

Isaac B. Gokah, MAPAC: Isaac will share his experience shaping a national aflatoxin risk management strategy in Malawi based on PACA’s regional framework.
