In 2015, we realised that despite the great work on demonstration plots and innovative agro-ecological practices to adapt to a changing environment and climate, at a landscape level and organisation level, things didn’t move fast enough compared to the imminent weather challenges that coffee smallholders face.
We investigated, with the support of the University of Greenwich, Natural Resources Institute, how we could improve coffee and climate resilience projects at three levels: i) Project Design, ii) Project Implementation (i.e methods, tools) and iii) Project Evaluation. Twin started by looking at two of its own projects in Nicaragua and Uganda.
These two case studies have already taught us a lot on the levels of intervention; the difficulty of developing an M&E approach for this type of programme; and how many of this type of initiative are actually also taking place in many other parts of the world but we simply aren’t collectively building on this knowledge and experience.
With this in mind, we published a short report based on two case studies with the aim of raising interest in the coffee industry to capture more lessons learnt from other projects in other coffee regions to achieve greater impact, faster and in more cohesive way.
Twin is currently seeking partners to add case studies to a final report and share expertise on this subject. We wish to publish this final report in summer 2016. We already had great feedback from some NGOs with similar initiatives who have expressed an interest in sharing project data and documentation and are also welcoming us to visit their project, at origin.
