Energy and Agroforestry Workshop, Brussels / Taller sobre Energía y Agro-foresteria realizado en BruselasOn 23/11/09 Andrew Emmott attended the final Competence Platform on Energy Crop and Agro-forestry Systems for Arid and Semi-arid Ecosystems- Africa (COMPETE) held in Brussels. COMPETE was an European Union Research & Development project aimed at identifying opportunities for Bio-energy crops which avoided the food-fuel debate.
The project developed a number of position papers and provided input into bio-energy policy positions being develop by several African countries. A key focus of the work was exchanges between African countries and also opportunities to share best & worst practices with exchange visits to Brazil, Mexico and India. For more information on the range of interesting project outcomes on Current Land Use; Improved Land Use; Sustainability International Cooperation; Financing & Trade and Policy Development see http://www.compete-bioafrica.net/. There is also the prospect of follow up projects which should extend the work beyond the arid and semi arid areas that COMPETE focused on. Please feel free to recommend areas of work that this follow up project might consider.
