GO NUTS FOR FAIRTRADE!

Fairtrade nuts are available for the first time in UK supermarkets thanks to Twin Trading – brazil nuts at Tesco and roasted, salted peanuts at The Co-op. They have been awarded the FAIRTRADE Mark so they carry an independent guarantee that the farmers aren’t being paid peanuts! As well as a guaranteed fair price, farmers receive a premium to invest in their communities and the security of long term trading relationships. This is a win-win situation – more security for producers and their families and delicious, ethically sound nuts for UK consumers.

Judith Judith Harry is 33, a peanut farmer in Malawi, southern Africa, and the single mother of a teenage girl. She says:

“I am very proud to have grown some of the groundnuts which have become the world’s first Fairtrade salted peanuts. In Mkanda where I live most farmers do not have enough food to last them the whole year. The guaranteed fair price which comes with Fairtrade is important as we will make a profit when we sell our nuts and we can use the money to lift up our lives.”

TESCO FAIRTRADE BRAZIL NUTS

Tesco fairtrade brazil nuts Where do they come from?
Tesco’s Fairtrade Brazil nuts come from families of gatherers in the Amazon rainforest of Bolivia and Brazil. Brazil nut trees can only grow in a specific region of the Amazon rainforest and cannot be cultivated elsewhere. This means that Brazil nut gathering provides local communities with an opportunity to earn a living which doesn’t involve chopping down the precious timber of the rainforest.
